Intro
I've been an Ado fan since 2019 when I discovered her covers of Moron and Hinderance. I was struck by how expressive and rich her voice was, and would listen to her covers on repeat during highschool. I'll be attending her first world tour this year, and wanted to make this page to reminisce on all the things I love about Ado.
Who is Ado?
Ado is an independent singer who began her career singing covers of vocaloid songs in her closet with recording software and equipment her parents bought as a Christmas gift. Not much is known about her personal life as she has chosen to stay anonymous, but we know her birthday is October 24, 2002. The word "ado" comes from a term in old Japanese theater, but Ado said she picked it because she liked the way it sounded. She is a fan of foreign music, in particular Queen, Daft Punk, and Ke$ha. Ado would upload her first ever cover to NicoNicoDouga in 2017 of Kimi no Taion. At this point, Ado has performed dozens of covers, I guarantee she's covered at least one song for everyone to like.
As of February 2024, Ado's vocal range is Gsharp2 - C7, 4 octaves and 4 semitones (the average singer has a range of 2-3 octaves).
Ado has released three albums so far, with all of the songs being written for her by various producers. Kyogen was the first, followed by the One Piece RED album (Ado sang the songs for the character Uta in the movie), and in December 2023 releasing Utattemita, a cover album where her fans voted for 10 songs they wanted her to sing.
Ado live history
April 4, 2022: Ado performs her first solo live show, Kigeki ("comedy")
August 11, 2022: Ado performs at the Saitama Arena, a venue with a capacity of 37,000, for Campanella
January 10, 2023: Ado performs her first national tour, Mirage
August 30, 2023: Ado performs Mars at the Budokan with breathtaking visuals and vocal performance, showcasing her raw talent and style at their peak
Ado has proven herself to be a phenomenal live performer who has improved significantly over those 3 years. I own the limited edition Campanella DVD, and although the audience's silence makes the performance feel a little lukewarm (COVID restrictions not allowing cheering), Ado's powerful voice resonates and sounds beautiful. I spent an evening ripping my favorite songs into mp3s to listen to on the go, and I think my favorite songs from the performance are Loveka, Eternal Dawn, Readymade, and Odo.
What's not to like?
No other singer captures my attention like Ado does. There are plenty of fantastically talented solo artists, don't get me wrong, but the sound of Ado's voice and her style is unparalleled. I can't think of a single person who sings like her. Ado is a phenomenon that happens once in a lifetime and I am so happy to be here for it. I lack the musical vocabulary to describe in depth what it is exactly about Ado that is so amazing, but I think her voice carries power and emotion that is so raw and captivating. The growling, the screaming, the vocal range, Ado is just incredible. I think part of it is the image Ado has curated, which I think represents solitude, strength, frustration, lonliness, and determination. It's just resonant. And I admire Ado's sensibility, too. Even though she livestreams often, she doesn't get into drama, and when people harass her or disrespect people she collaborates with, she puts her foot down and says something, but does it in a way that makes her look even better. I think it takes a special kind of person to withstand millions of eyes on you at such a young age. Ado's music motivates me. I've been listening to her music while going through some medical procedures and dealing with some recent tragedies, and I feel like I'm at a point in my life where for the first time I feel safe enough to be shamelessly excited about something. I remember I'm going to see her live in a month and a half and it doesn't even feel real. I hope for good things this year.
